A Knock on the Door

“So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.”

1 John 4:16

We, in all aspects of the ministry that God has entrusted to us, understand what we do – whether in the clinic, or the widow’s project, or the airplanes or the schools – we know that the work is only a door into the lives of the people here. It gives us an opportunity to speak to people about the amazing love of Jesus. Sometimes those opportunities come to large groups of 60 or 70 people waiting for their clinic visits or in the schools where we can share with 100 children, or sometimes those moments come to one person.

Isabella, is an 80-year-old widow who has come to the clinic for many years for food. She is essentially blind from her cataracts which she is afraid to have repaired. She couldn’t have children, so she is alone. She lives in a 1 room adobe house, cooks on an open fire on the dirt floor of her room…a little tricky when you can not see! Until recently, she was able to walk up to the clinic, but when we didn’t see her for a couple of weeks, we went down to her house to check on her. She had fallen and was not able to walk. We offered to bring her back to Canillá, where we could care for her, but she prefers to stay in her home. So… we visit once a week, take her some of her favorite foods, a little medicine and we listen to her. She is lonely and in pain and she knows she is dying. Jesus, and the hope of life, eternal, is all she has to hold on to, and we gladly share that good news with her at every opportunity.
